Difference between market research and DESIGN THINKING

Objective of the Video

To learn how to design your own research
Key Learnings from the Video

1. Market Research v/s Design Research

The following quadrants of challenge context will help you in creating a research plan/designing research:

i. Extreme users: Find the problems of the extreme users and their solutions. This solution will be acceptable or adaptable to average users or normal users.

For example:

In the Oral B case study, the extreme users were the children and parents who were complaining to doctors or psychologists that their children are not enjoying the process of brushing their teeth. In this case, researchers talked to parents of such children to identify the solution.
ii. Already known assumptions: In this part, whatever you or your team members know about the problem of the user or his current position is written.

iii. Tools and techniques: In this part, you have to specify which team member will use which technique (observation or immersion) and when.

iv. Conversation: You have to prepare notes mentioning what questions you will ask, how you will ask, how you will start and end the interview, and what you want to know from the conversation.

v. Record: Try to write the exact verbatim with the user or take permission to record the conversation. The verbatim of the recorded conversation makes it easy for your team to do synthesis.

3. Making Sense/Deriving Information from the Collected Data

You should use the ‘Iceberg Model’ to make sense of the collected data. You have to do the following:

i. What do you see/What do users say? (Actions or conscious reflection): Write the user behaviour you observed, conversed, or analysed through immersion.

ii. How do users feel? (Subconscious emotions): Write the users emotions that you have observed during the conversation.

iii. What do users do? (Unconscious beliefs): You need to write the invisible problem of the user and analysed it during the in-depth conversation. This is possible only by discussion and when data will be shared with the team.

For example:

The Big Bazaar case study is an example of the iceberg model.

The team of Big Bazaar observed the customers in the Kirana stores and found that customers are purchasing grains by touching and feeling them. They analysed the emotion related to it.

The customers were feeling safe and assured after touching the grains.

After touching and feeling the grains, customers felt that their decision is not bad and they spent the money at the right place. This is the unconscious belief of the customers.

When the iceberg model was used for analyzing this information, it became very easy to derive information from it.

In the same way, your team has to discuss every verbatim to:

Find the invisible problem
Find a common pattern
Pick an exciting/interesting invisible problem that challenges your current assumptions
Key Outcomes of the Video

iii.

iii.
