Objective of the Video

To learn how Oral-B made its product successful and improved its sales using design thinking
Key Learnings from the Video

1. Design Thinking by Oral-B

Oral-B was struggling in the 90s to sell kids toothbrushes for the age group 3 to 5 years.
They have tried everything from offering discounts, coupons, free gifts to even changing its design but nothing was working.
They conducted market research and taken feedback through questionnaires, which was very positive.
They also did a comparative analysis and found that their market share is 23% and also the other companies who are their competitors share the same percentage in the market.
They thought of outsourcing this problem and selected IDEO.
IDEO was a successful product design company at that time and known to be the godfather of design thinking. At present, it’s a product and innovation company.
IDEO understood the problem with the leadership team of Oral-B and appointed a team of researchers and they were named as design thinkers.
They made a research plan and went to the doctors, psychologists, and pediatricians. They asked them about how many parents came to them with the brushing problem of their child.
They made a list of 30-40 people, divided amongst them, and decided to observe them while they are brushing, play with them, make their videos, take notes, and collect data.
They did this for one month and found that there is a problem with experience. They then moved from their sales problem and redefined the problem.
Problem Faced by Children

The problems children were facing were:

Dropping of Brush: They analysed that children were facing problems in holding the toothbrush. Brushes at that time had cute little handles which were difficult to hold and therefore brush was dropping. So, they thought to make a little thick grip and it worked.
Punching their Face: They thought to make the brush a little longer and thicker but this time the problem was not solved. They then consulted a child psychologist. As per the advice of the child psychologist, they made the brush that has a little tempered boundary for the children to hold the brush, and by doing so they solved this problem too.
Hurting them while Brushing: This problem was solved by making the bristles of the brush soft and making the neck of the brush flexible.
Get a Grip Campaign of Oral-B

The end product which emerged after solving all the three problems was weird and they thought it will not be acceptable to the market. So, the leadership team decided to launch the brush in the market through “Get a Grip Campaign”. After the launch of the product through this campaign, their market share increased from 23% to 72%. They stayed as a market leader for 18 months.

2.How Oral-B became a Market Leader?

Becoming a market leader in such a short period, a big thing for an FMCG Company was only possible by design thinking only.

IDEO kept a beginner's mindset, all the 5 design thinkers went to the ground and understood the user’s problem, talked to them, understood their pain points, their beliefs, their emotions, collected data, identified the pattern, and re-defined the problem.

They were not hesitant to flip from the problem of sales. They found out some ideas, made prototypes, and gave them to all the 30-40 kids. They asked for feedback from all the end-users. After that, they kept the component, which was solving the problem, and gave it to Oral-B, which was launched in the market. A struggling business became a successful business. This whole thing can be put into a framework, known as the double-diamond model of design thinking.

3. Double-Diamond Model of Design Thinking

It is divided into two diamonds or phases:

Find the Right Problem: In this, you first empathize and diverge by talking to different stakeholders. You empathize again, converge, re-define the problem and create a re-framed problem.
Find the Right Solution: In this, you ideate and diverge, again ideate and converge through prototype and converge.
This double-diamond approach is designed by UK counsel after studying the design process followed by 12 design-led companies.

(Design Thinking)
