how to manage
Objective of the Video
To learn how to generate emotions in different situations
Key Learnings from the Video
1. How to Generate Emotions in Different Situations?
Human brain generates different types of emotions such as:
Anger
Love
Hungry
Thirsty
There are times when emotions are generated after thoughtfully thinking about something but they can also be generated randomly by not indulging into it much.
Sometimes, you might not be able to generate the right emotions in a particular situation.
So, it’s very important to remind yourself, about how you reacted in the same situation earlier and ensure that you take corrective measures.
For example:
If someone hits your car from back, your brain will immediately generate the emotion of anger without thinking about the reasons like:
May be the other person has lost control
May be there was a brake failure
May be the other person has not seen the car
So, anger is not the right emotion in this situation.
The right emotion should be to ask the other person:
How did the car hit?
Have you lost control?
Have you lost control on the steering?
To generate the right emotion, you should:
Understanding/Questioning: Asking questions will help you to understand the situation in a better way and generate the right emotion.
Self-Talk: This will help you in generating the right emotion. Before expressing any emotion, talk to yourself whether you will expect the same emotion from another person or not. When you will try to do so, then you will be able to bring instant and quick change in your emotion. This will help you to:
Get time to rethink about action: You will get time to rethink whether the emotion you are generating is right or not.
Positive impact: You will be able to build a positive connect with the other person.
Helps in taking right decision after comparing the available options: Self-talk helps in taking the right decision after comparing different options. For example, you were searching a school for your child and you have three options – School A, B, and C. One of your friends recommended School A but later, you come to know that this school has security issues. So, give yourself time and don’t get influenced by others as you need time for your thinking process.
2. Impact of Generating Emotions Without No Evidence
When you generate emotions without any evidence, then it impacts your thought process.
For instance, in the above example, you will start thinking why your friend has recommended the School A and you will be angry with him and next time, when you will meet him, your emotions and behaviour towards him will not be good.
So, don’t generate any emotion based on little information or no evidence because it can:
Be challenging for you to change your emotions
Have an adverse impact on your relationships
Golden Statement:
Incomplete information is dangerous.
Before taking any decision, you should:
Think and understand the situation
Discuss with someone
